What to Pack for the Azores 🎒🌋

Planning a trip to the Azores and wondering what to pack?

You’re not alone.

The Azores are famous for volcanic landscapes, crater lakes, hot springs and incredible Atlantic views, but they’re also famous for having several seasons in the same day. ☀️🌧️🌬️

You can leave your accommodation under blue skies, find rain at a viewpoint and be back in the sunshine an hour later.

The secret? Pack smart, not heavy.

Whether you’re joining our Azores Expedition or exploring São Miguel on your own, here’s what you should bring.

🌦️ First: Understand the Azores Weather

The most important thing to know before packing for the Azores is that the weather can change quickly.

São Miguel has a mild Atlantic climate, but conditions can be very different depending on where you are on the island.

It might be sunny in Ponta Delgada while clouds cover the mountains or rain falls around Sete Cidades.

That’s completely normal.

Instead of packing for one specific type of weather, prepare for a little bit of everything.

The golden rule:

Layers, layers, layers.

👕 T-shirt
🧥 Light sweater or hoodie
🌧️ Waterproof jacket

This combination will prepare you for most situations.

🎒 The Essential Azores Packing List

🌧️ 1. Waterproof Jacket

Probably the most important thing in your backpack.

You don’t need a huge winter coat, but you should bring a light waterproof or rain-resistant jacket that you can easily carry during the day.

Even if the forecast says sunshine, take it with you.

You’ll thank us later. 😅

👟 2. Comfortable Shoes

The Azores are not a destination where you’ll spend the whole trip walking around cities.

You’ll probably encounter:

🌿 Nature trails
🌋 Volcanic landscapes
💦 Wet paths
🪨 Uneven terrain
🌊 Coastal areas
🌲 Forests

Bring comfortable trainers with good grip or lightweight hiking shoes.

Avoid making brand-new shoes your main pair.

A trip to the Azores isn’t the best place to discover that your new trainers give you blisters. 😬

🩴 3. A Second Pair of Shoes

Having another pair is surprisingly useful.

If your main shoes get wet during the day, you’ll still have something dry to wear later.

Light trainers, sandals or flip-flops are enough depending on the season.

👕 4. Clothes You Can Layer

Forget about trying to predict exactly what you’ll wear each day.

Bring clothes that work together.

A good combination is:

👕 T-shirts
👚 Long-sleeve top
🧥 Hoodie or sweater
🌧️ Waterproof outer layer

You can add or remove layers throughout the day depending on the weather.

This is much more practical than bringing one very heavy jacket.

👖 5. Comfortable Trousers

Bring clothes that you don’t mind wearing while exploring.

Jeans are fine for evenings, but comfortable trousers, leggings or sportswear are usually better during days spent discovering the island.

Quick-drying materials can be especially useful if the weather changes.

🩱 Yes, Bring a Swimsuit!

Even if you’re travelling outside summer.

Seriously.

Do not go to the Azores without a swimsuit. 😅

São Miguel is famous for its geothermal activity and thermal bathing experiences.

You may find yourself swimming while the air outside is cool or even raining.

It’s part of the experience. ♨️

We recommend bringing:

🩱 Swimsuit / swimming shorts
🩴 Flip-flops
🧴 Small toiletries bag

If you have space, bringing two swimsuits can also be useful so you don’t have to put on a wet one the following day.

⚠️ Don’t Bring Your Favourite Swimsuit

This is one of those Azores tips people often discover too late.

Some thermal waters are naturally rich in minerals, particularly iron.

These minerals can stain light-coloured swimwear.

Bring an older or darker swimsuit that you won’t be devastated to lose to the Azorean thermal-water gods. 😅♨️

The same applies to towels.

🧴 6. Towel

Check whether towels are provided by your accommodation or thermal facility.

Even when they are, having a small microfibre travel towel can be useful.

They’re light, dry quickly and take up very little space.

🎒 7. Small Day Backpack

You don’t want to carry your suitcase around São Miguel.

Bring a small backpack for your daily adventures.

Inside, you can keep:

🌧️ Waterproof jacket
💧 Water bottle
🧴 Sunscreen
🕶️ Sunglasses
🔋 Power bank
🩱 Swimsuit
🍫 Snacks
📱 Phone

A backpack is much more practical than a handbag or large travel bag when exploring nature.

☀️ 8. Sunscreen

Clouds can be misleading.

Even when the weather doesn’t feel particularly hot, you can still spend many hours outside.

Bring sunscreen and use it regularly, especially during longer days exploring the island.

🕶️ 9. Sunglasses

Rain jacket and sunglasses in the same backpack?

Welcome to the Azores. 😂

You may genuinely use both within the same hour.

💧 10. Reusable Water Bottle

You’ll spend plenty of time exploring, so having water with you is always a good idea.

A reusable bottle is convenient and also helps reduce unnecessary plastic waste during your trip.

🔋 11. Power Bank

São Miguel is ridiculously photogenic.

You’ll probably use your phone for:

📸 Photos
🎥 Videos
🗺️ Maps
💬 WhatsApp
🎶 Music
📱 Social media

And suddenly…

3% battery. 🪫

Bring a power bank, especially for full days away from your accommodation.

📱 12. Phone Charger

It sounds obvious.

Until someone forgets it. 😂

Bring your normal charger and, if you’re travelling with several devices, consider bringing a multi-port USB charger.

Portugal and the Azores use European Type C and F plugs.

Travellers from the UK, Ireland and countries using different sockets should bring an appropriate adapter.

🪪 13. ID or Passport

The Azores are part of Portugal.

If you’re travelling from mainland Portugal, you’re still travelling within Portuguese territory, but you’ll need appropriate identification for your flight.

EU/EEA travellers can generally travel using accepted national identification documents, while other nationalities should check the requirements that apply to them.

Keep your document somewhere safe and accessible during your journey.

💳 14. Bank Card + Some Cash

Cards are widely accepted, but carrying a small amount of cash is still useful.

You might need it for:

☕ Small cafés
🍴 Local restaurants
🎁 Small purchases
🥤 Quick stops
💶 Activities or personal expenses

You don’t need to carry large amounts of cash — just enough for situations where paying by card isn’t convenient.

💊 15. Personal Medication

Bring any medication you regularly use and enough for the entire trip.

It’s also useful to have a very small travel kit containing basics such as plasters, especially if you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

📸 16. Camera: If You’re Into Photography

Your phone is more than enough for most people.

But if you love photography, you’ll have plenty to shoot.

Expect:

🌋 Crater landscapes
💙 Blue and green lakes
🌊 Atlantic cliffs
♨️ Geothermal areas
🌿 Hydrangeas and forests
🌅 Sunsets
🏞️ Incredible viewpoints

Bring extra batteries or memory cards if you’re using a dedicated camera.

🧳 What You DON’T Need to Pack

Packing light will make your trip much easier.

You probably don’t need:

❌ Several heavy coats
❌ Formal clothes
❌ Multiple pairs of jeans
❌ Too many pairs of shoes
❌ Huge amounts of toiletries
❌ Half your wardrobe “just in case”

The Azores are casual.

Comfort wins.

🌧️ What If It Rains?

Then you’re getting the authentic Azores experience. 😎🌧️

Rain doesn’t necessarily mean your day is ruined.

Weather conditions can change surprisingly quickly, and because São Miguel has different microclimates, it can be raining in one part of the island while another is completely clear.

That’s why locals and experienced travellers rarely make plans based only on a single weather forecast.

Bring your waterproof jacket and keep exploring.

Some places actually look even more dramatic under the clouds.

🌋 Don’t Dress for Instagram , Dress for the Azores

Of course you’ll want good photos.

We get it. 📸

But when you’re standing next to a volcanic crater with wind coming from the Atlantic, you’ll be very happy you chose comfortable shoes and a waterproof jacket over the perfect outfit.

You can always bring something nicer for the evening.

During the day:

Comfort > fashion.

Your photos will still be incredible. 😉
